Abuja, Nigeria – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has underscored the strategic role of sports in strengthening national cohesion, fostering international partnerships and advancing national security through constructive engagement and peaceful competition.

Gen. Shaibu, in a statement by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele said this on Sunday, at the closing ceremony of the International Open Archery Championship held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja.

He stressed that such engagements complement kinetic military operations by strengthening civil-military relations, promoting social cohesion and contributing to a holistic approach to national security.

He commended participating athletes for their discipline, dedication and sportsmanship, noting that sporting events provide opportunities for talent development, cultural exchange and stronger international partnerships.
He assured that the Nigerian Army would continue to support sporting initiatives that promote healthy competition, public trust and national development.

The championship, organised by the Nigerian Archery Federation, attracted participants from across Africa and beyond.

Earlier, President of the Federation, Alhaji Mohammed Baba, commended the COAS and the Nigerian Army for supporting the championship and providing the venue, noting that such partnerships are vital to the growth of archery and international sporting cooperation.
