Abuja, Nigeria — The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of Defence Headquarters to the welfare, dignity and continued relevance of Nigeria’s military veterans.
General Oluyede gave the assurance on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when the leadership of the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers Association (RANAOA) paid him a courtesy visit at DHQ, Abuja.
The delegation, led by the National President, Major General Hussaini Abayomi Salihu (Rtd), came to formally engage the CDS, who also serves as Chief Patron of the association, and to deepen collaboration between DHQ and the veterans’ community.
Commending the CDS for sustaining engagement with veterans across the six geopolitical zones, Major General Salihu said the visit was also to familiarise the new EXCO with the Defence Chief.
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for improving welfare across the Armed Forces, citing the recent salary increase for serving personnel and consequential adjustments for retirees.
The association also requested the establishment of a comprehensive database of retired officers to help companies and organisations easily access qualified veterans for expertise and services.
Responding, General Oluyede thanked the veterans for their service and sacrifices, noting that their contributions to Nigeria’s security remain deeply appreciated.
On pensions, the CDS assured that the ongoing salary adjustment exercise is comprehensive and inclusive, with direct implications for veterans’ benefits in line with government policy.
“Implementation is already underway. Adjustments to emoluments of serving personnel have consequential implications for pensions and benefits of veterans,” he said.
BOI Loan Partnership, Other Initiatives –
The CDS disclosed that DHQ is partnering with the Bank of Industry, BOI, to provide low-interest loans for serving personnel, veterans and their families to start and expand businesses.
He described the initiative as part of broader efforts to promote economic empowerment, self-reliance and improved quality of life for military families.
“Those who served the nation deserve sustained institutional support and dignity in retirement,” General Oluyede stated.
He pledged to work with the association within existing policy frameworks to address welfare concerns.
The engagement, according to DHQ, underscores the military leadership’s resolve to maintain a strong bond with veterans and keep their welfare central to institutional priorities.
