The new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Waidi Shaibu, now promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, has promised to improve on the “Soldier-First” concept introduced by his predecessor, General Olufemi Oluyede.

He also expressed his commitment to creating a professional, innovative and formidable force in the country.
The new COAS spoke in Abuja while taking over the new office as the 25th Chief of Army Staff from Gen Oluyede. Security Watch Africa (SWA) covered the ceremony.
He said “History has made it that I’m the one that God Almighty has favoured to receive this mantle of leadership of the Nigerian Army, as leader.
According to him, over the past years, there have been quantum increase in the procurement of equipment, infrastructural development and purposeful leadership.
Commending the immediate past COAS, he said that he has shown empathy in administration and commitment in the command of the Soldier-First concept, adding “which I tend to improve upon.”
Towards achieving national security, he promised to pursue a collective effort through synergy with all security agencies, ministries, department and agencies of government.
If there is need for advise, he said he will not hesitate to tap from Gen Oluyede’s experience and wisdom.
“Be rest assured of my continued loyalty and dedicated commitments. I promise to do everything within my powers to improve on your legacy of calm, proficient, effective and admirable leadership style.”
Lieutenant General Shaibu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and all the senior officers that were disengaged from service by virtue of his appointment as Chief of Army Staff.
“You all have been instrumental in grooming me for this position today,” he stated.
On the threats facing the country, he assured that his leadership will not disappoint the nation.
Remembering the soldiers that have paid the supreme price, he assured their families that they will not be forgotten.
He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for finding him worthy to be entrusted with the highly demanding job.
The new COAS appreciated his predecessor and new Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede for his mentorship over the past three decades.
“I must especially thank you sir for your support, briefing and guidance that you have provided.”

In his speech at the occasion, the immediate past COAS, Gen Oluyede appreciated officers and men for their sacrifices and their exceptional display of discipline and courage under his leadership.
He also thanked others for their contributions to the success recorded as the COAS.
