Enugu, Nigeria – The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, for the alleged gruesome murder of his girlfriend and concealing her remains inside the toilet of his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
SP Daniel Ndukwe, Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, in a statement on Tuesday, said Emmanuel was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by operatives of Awkunanaw Division on September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., following intelligence on the alleged murder.
According to the Command, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the victim, identified only as Chinyere, on September 19, wrapped her remains in a nylon bag and locked it inside his toilet.
The crime was uncovered when neighbours, attracted by the offensive odour from the decomposing body, forced the door open and apprehended him before alerting the police.
The remains of the victim, whose surname, age and address are yet to be established, have been evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to trace and notify her relatives.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, claiming the incident followed a heated argument over who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). He told investigators he struck the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, before wrapping and dumping the body in the toilet.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation and ensure the suspect is charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
CP Giwa also cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to always inform trusted relatives or friends of their movements and to exercise caution about whom they visit or spend time with.
