A 30-year-old man, has been arrested by operatives of the South Africa Police Service in collaboration with the Metro Police, for the alleged murder of his 53-year-old mother, Ms Ncamisile Zondi, at Luganda, Kwazulu-Natal Province.
It was learnt that since the incident happened in December 2020, the Police had launched a manhunt for the suspect.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was last seen on December 23, 2020, as community members started searching for her after it was reported to the Police.
According to the Acting Provincial Commissioner of Kwazulu-Natal, Major General Thulani Gonya, the dead body of the woman was found on December 29, 2020, after members of the community continued with the search which led them to the long-drop toilet which is situated on the deceased’s compound.
“ They discovered that there was sand covered on the already functioning toilet. The community members removed the walls of the toilet and began digging. While digging they noticed some clothing items including some bedding items which was also followed with an usual smell. They then stopped digging and called the Police.
“ Police operatives from Marianhill responded to the scene and called the Search and Rescue Team. SAPS and Metro Search and Rescue teams responded and recovered the body of the deceased. The body was still recognisable. The clothing items had some visible blood stains.
The two roomed house that belonged to the deceased was locked.
“ The door was forced open and everything seems to be in order except the bedding which was removed from the bed which could confirm that it was same clothing items were found in the toilet. According to the neighbours, the deceased was living with her long lost son who only returned about six months before the deceased died.
“ Furthermore, it was discovered that the deceased had received her stokvel payouts. She was supposed to visit her home as she was originally from Bulwer. Her son left home before Christmas and he informed the neighbours that he was going to the camp at EBuhleni in Inanda.
That was the last time her son was seen. Intensive investigation was conducted and suspect was nowhere to be found.
“ On Saturday, March 20, the Mariannhill Detectives received information that the suspect was at Luganda hence they proceeded to the area and the suspect was eventually arrested. The suspect will appear before Pinetown Magistrates’ Court, facing murder charges, ” he said.
Gonya praised the detectives for the arrest of the suspect after he had been on a run for more than two months.
