Enugu, Nigeria – The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered full investigation into a viral video showing the alleged trial by ordeal and assault of a 60-year-old woman in Nkanu East Local Government Area.
The victim has been identified as Mrs. Chinenye Okonkwo of Amafu Village, Ugbawka, Nkanu East.
Police operatives from Nkanu East Division, following the circulation of the video, visited the victim and obtained her statement.
Preliminary findings indicate she was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, including being forced to eat human faeces, over accusations of witchcraft and responsibility for the death of her husband’s brother’s wife.
In a statement on October 12, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner condemned the acts of violence and degrading treatment, and directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) to take over thorough investigation.
CP Giwa also ordered intensified efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators, who are currently at large, and their accomplices.
He warned against jungle justice and other forms of self-help, assuring that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The Command urged members of the public with useful information that could aid arrests to come forward.
